Vedarambh Sanskar
The sacred rite that marks the beginning of Vedic study
The Vedarambh Sanskar is the most sacred and moving moment of Gurukul education. It is the rite in which a girl is formally initiated into Vedic study — in the presence of the guru, before the sacred fire.
In the ancient Indian tradition, the Vedarambh (Upanayana) is one of the sixteen samskaras of life. It is regarded as a "second birth" — for after it the girl enters a new world of knowledge. Maharshi Dayanand made it clear that this rite is equally ordained for both boys and girls.
The Rite, Step by Step
- PreparationThe girl is told about the meaning and significance of the rite.
- Setting up the Fire-altarConstruction of the altar and arrangement of the firewood and offerings.
- Teaching of the Gayatri MantraThe guru imparts the Gayatri mantra to the girl — the central part of the rite.
- Wearing the Sacred ThreadWearing the sacred thread, a symbol of the vow to pursue knowledge.
- The OblationsOfferings into the sacred fire, with the recitation of Veda mantras.
- The Guru's BlessingBlessings from the guru and the assembled scholars.
After the Vedarambh, the girl regularly performs the morning and evening Sandhya worship, recites the Gayatri mantra, and the course of Vedic study begins.
